Life of the Mind Response

The drawing depicted is a symbolic piece on the relationship of natural resources and the story of Henrietta Lacks. In the drawing we are presented with a grave with a question mark and a tree stump on the side of a hill looking over a barren land. The unmarked grave is symbolic of Henrietta Lacks burial and the tree stump symbolizes how the Lacks family and the Black community in America has been chopped down and used to build up this country without recognition. You may be able to recognize a significant building, piece of art or important structure. However, you would probably never be able to recognize the tree that was chopped down to make it. Henrietta is the tree. When a University or Physician makes a medical advancement you recognize whomever found it not the people whose lives were altered to find it.
